Freitag 06. bis Sonntag 08. August 2027: Marina Soria: Calligraphy in Blossom
If we start with letters, the results will be quite similar to what we already know. But if we explore a much broader range of shapes found in nature, such as flowers, leaves, and branches, we open up a whole new world of possibilities.
Nature will be our starting point. We’ll experiment with the Japanese brush, exploring the different kinds of strokes and the many possibilities this tool offers. We’ll study the basic shapes of simple flowers and learn to represent them in just a few strokes, as in the sumi-e tradition.
We’ll explore Taoist principles of beauty and create a blossoming alphabet, developing different solutions for the same character to expand our graphic and design possibilities. We’ll also create an ikebana composition and work with quick, rough sketches, moving from figurative forms to abstraction in just a few minutes.
Our tools will be the Japanese brush and the cola pen. We’ll begin with sumi or walnut ink and then introduce colour. The workshop will culminate in a concertina book in which natural rhythms and visual echoes take priority over legibility. The playful nature of painting will open our minds, while the joy of the process will shine through our strokes.
